Yesterday No Longer Matters

True, it is important to learn the lessons of the past but, it is not good to get hung up on past mistakes. ImageForgive yourself and others and then move on. Strive to make better choices in the future. That’s really a key thing for living life in general right? Simply, do your best to make the right choices most of the time. One of the chief mistakes that we, as Christians make all too often is that we consistently beat ourselves up, condemn ourselves for non-Christ-like behavior. So many of us try to be too perfect and then become discouraged when we make mistakes or fail in some way.

God’s word tells us that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.” (NKJV) What does that really mean? It means simply that Jesus finished everything on the cross so live in peace. He forgives you so you should forgive yourself.

It is not right to simply use this fact as the “safety net” or rather as an excuse to willfully sin. Making continual choices to sin and know that God will forgive you anyway. That is not how it should be. There is a balance in everything. Walk in grace but, do not abuse it.

Romans 6:1-4 says, “1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life.”  (NKJV) Meaning that once you accept Jesus Christ as your LORD and savior, your old self dies and you are a new creation! Isn’t that amazing?!

My pastor loves to teach simple truths and I love that about him. One Sunday he taught on this very subject.

Image

My pastor used the example that when a caterpillar goes through metamorphosis and becomes a butterfly, people do not say, “Oh look, there goes a converted worm” – they call it by its new name, because it is a wholly and completely new creation. No longer is it a caterpillar but, now a butterfly, just as we are a new creation in Christ Jesus.

That is the best example I think I have ever heard to explain how we are made new once we become believers in Christ.

Once we have become a new believer in Christ, and begin our walk with the LORD, it is almost like when you get new clothes, you’re so excited to have the new clothes and you tend to be more careful with them as to not “mess them up”.  Reading the instruction label on how to care for them in the wash etc… You are careful for a while but, then “forget” or the new thing becomes not so new and we stop being so excited or careful – just like our walk with the LORD.

When we are first saved, some of us go bonkers, completely on fire for God not knowing an epistle from an apostle but, still wanting to share Jesus with everything that breathes! Then over time, that fire diminishes and becomes more like a low glow instead of a roaring flame. Some Christians condemn themselves for that diminished flame and do not recover well – they may feel like they are lacking in their spiritual life or not truly walking with the LORD because they cannot seem to recapture that “first saved euphoria”.

We cannot help but “mellow out” over time and I think that mellowing is just a natural part of maturing as a Christian. I am not referring to mellowing to the point of needing to take your pulse, but rather a calm and gentle sort of mellow, a quiet confidence, which one can only develop by years of walking with and trusting God.

Even the most mature Christians do not always walk perfectly with the LORD. Paul the apostle writes to us about this in Romans 7:14-15 “14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.” (NKJV)

Apostle_Paul_Vatican1

So you see, even the apostle Paul who walked with Jesus literally, still sinned, still made mistakes and in the scripture above, is writing about his own struggles in his life. So be encouraged beloved! It’s OK to make mistakes but, do not stay there! Don’t condemn yourself, forgive and move on. Seek to walk closer with the LORD daily and you will stumble less and less over time.

So my dear brothers and sisters, yesterday doesn’t matter. I encourage you to forgive yourself and others, learn from your mistakes, live, love and move forward leaving the mistakes of yesterday behind. Walk with God’s word as the lamp unto your feet illuminating each step. Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (NKJV)

I hope that you have been blessed and encouraged by this article today.

April Showers

This is the month of April. Like the saying “April showers bring May flowers”, this month is most well known for its rain. Aside from myself, there aren’t too many people I know that actually love the rain.

open hands

Most, begrudgingly admit that we need it, while some of you may not even like to admit that much. The water floods our basements, sogs up our socks, ruins our hair, makes mascara run, and cuts short playtime outside.

What’s so good about the rain? Storms cause nothing but trouble! Don’t we say the same things about the storms in our lives, those pesky trials? What good can come from trials when there’s so much pain and aggravation.

Does a storm come only to destroy? No! The rains come to give life back to the land. The flowers of May cannot grow unless the rains of April come.

The same goes for trials.

They aren’t there to terminate us; they’re there to show us where we’re at and to grow us. We can’t get anywhere by staying in our comfort zone, sometimes you have to get wet.

What if a seed decided it didn’t want to go through the winter or the early spring months? If it could decide to skip being in those uncomfortable times, it would never grow into a plant. It could never become something beautiful and exuberant to be praised and smiled at by the gardener.

How about you? Would you rather skip the trials and miss out on being transformed into who you’re really meant to be?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I want to stay a tiny wrinkly seed. So open your hands, and welcome the trials as blessings. Stand in the rain with your arms open, soaking it in and know that God is with us always, the Perfect Gardener. In the end, after the storms, there is peace and beauty.

I hope this post has blessed you!

The Illusion of Self Esteem

i-love-myselfRecently, I saw a picture with a quote from a well-known Christian author and speaker.

Paraphrasing the quote, it said words to the effect of “being sure to speak more sweetly to oneself”. I must say that I respectfully disagree. Now I am not saying that you should berate yourself unless of course you feel as though you deserve it, and that is how you keep  yourself in “check”. Just kidding.

No but, I am going to illustrate how most people get too wrapped up in self-esteem. Personally, I do not believe in “self” esteem. I believe in being confident in who God is molding me to be.

To be made more into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ.  You see, I believe that our identity should be in Christ alone therefore there is no need for the “self” in esteem.

Besides, doesn’t God’s word say to esteem others higher than oneself? Philippians 2:3 says, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.”(NKJV)

Hmmm… so where does self-esteem fit in there and mesh with God’s word? If anyone has an argument for that I would love to read it.

Often times I hear parents say that their children suffer from low or bad self-esteem and that they are reading such and such book, following such and such speaker, author or psychologist. Some parents are spending scads of money on therapy all to help their children have a better self-image or self-esteem.  self_esteem_pills

I understand that parents want their children to have a healthy image, be confident, productive members of society and that is all fine and good but, when the focus on self takes over, that is where the problem lies. I think that by and large, as Christian parents, of course, we try to do what we think is best but, are we truly instilling the word of God in our young ones from early on?

Are we truly investing the time to do a family bible study? Do we quote and use scripture appropriately to correct, encourage and strengthen our families? I know that sometimes I do a poor job of it and work and pray hard to do better all the time.

One thing that gets in the way of family time or time with God is the media.

Television, video games and the Internet… are all as I call them, “time stealers”. They all stealthily and incrementally steal chunks of time from our lives. They lull us to sleep and plant the seeds of wordly ideas in place of Godly ones.

There is a children’s song sung in Sunday schools everywhere that goes something like, “Be careful little eyes what you see, careful little ears what you hear”… Well, I have news for you, being careful with those things should never cease being important no matter how old you are.  God’s word also admonishes to guard our hearts and minds.

We can only discern what God’s ideas for our lives are if we take the time needed with Him in His word and listen for His still small voice. The world is noisy, the world’s voice and ideas about who you should be and what you should be eating, wearing, thinking and doing are easily heard. They fill our every sense, just about every minute of every day.

God’s voice is quiet, gentle, patient and loving. God requires us to be still, be quiet, to be in His word to know His character and discern the plans that He has for us. His plans are far better than anything we can conceive of for ourselves and are most certainly better than anything this dying world has to offer.

So whose voice will you listen to? The voice that says, that you have to consider yourself better? Or will you listen to the voice that spoke everything into being and tells us to esteem one another higher than yourself?

I truly hope that this article has encouraged you and blessed you this day.

The Family Part 2 Wives To Their Husbands

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22.

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22.

The part of scripture I am about to talk about raises almost more eyebrows, more debate, and more disagreement than almost any. It is this “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22. This verse is straight forward and leaves no doubt what God’s will for a wife is in the marriage. Why the controversy?  Men have abused this verse badly. Women do not want to be ruled.

Let me start this by saying that it is not the man’s right to demand this of his wife or, enforce it in any way. This is her gift to give to you to show her love to the LORD. Yes, a gift to be given not co-horsed, beaten, prodded, or other methods by men to get her to submit to him. Nor is this to any other man either, just her husband. So let us explore this gift of love.

Submission by definition is, to give over or yield to the power or authority of another. So God is saying a wife should yield to her husband as unto the LORD. Yes this does mean in all things. There is only ever one reason she should not yield and that is if it is direct defiance of the LORD’s commands.

So why would God say this? Why would God tell women to submit to her husband when she is fully capable of making good decisions on her own and in many circumstances maybe be even better than her husband’s? How is this relevant today when women are strong leaders and are able to be equally good at supporting the family as a bread winner? Well the answer we hear a lot of times is that God said so. While true, it does not make it easier to do.

Here is the reason why. For in submitting to her husband she is allowing God to be ingen316 charge over her husband instead of her. In Genesis chapter 3 after Adam and Eve eat from the tree we see God’s judgment on them both for disobeying God.

16 To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”

17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:

Although in the account we are not told what Eve said to Adam as to get him to eat of the fruit. Clearly in verse 17 God tells us that Adam heeded the voice of His wife. Adam chose to listen to her instead of God.

“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” Matthew 6:24. Although this verse seems to only be talking about money or wealth, I contend that this is talking about anything we put in place of God. This does apply to the marriage relationship also. If your husband is listening to you or following your direction how can He serve the LORD? Even though what you want is right and good.

Even when a man wants to follow the LORD women can be very persuasive. There is a scene in the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding where the women are trying to get the husband to allow the daughter to go to school. In this scene one of the women says men are the head but the women are the neck. “Wherever the neck turns, so does the head.”

In addition to the women being very persuasive we see as prior to the fact of God’s judgment the reason why God decided to do what He did. 9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?” 12 Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” 13 And the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Adam instead of taking responsibility for his actions, not only blamed the woman for his trespass but also God because He created the woman for Adam. Eve instead of blaming herself for not listening to God through her husband she blamed Satan. It is for these very reasons that God said that a man must lead and a woman shall follow. Because they did not stand up and bear the blame for their actions. This has been the case for sin throughout history. Instead of bearing the responsibility for our own actions we seek to blame others. Men no longer have an excuse of “well the woman made me do it,” and women do not have the excuse any longer in that the devil made me do it. He has made us responsible for our own actions.

This is important because the only way we can be forgiven is if we own up to our failings and disobedience. God wants to forgive us and have mercy and grace on us. Matthew 9:13  But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”  Neither Adam nor Eve ever asked for forgiveness for what they did, instead they just blamed others. If they had asked, I truly believe that things would have been different.

So wives love God by submitting to your husband and allow God to deal directly with your husband and cause Him to do His part. In doing so you show your husband mercy, grace and love, allow God to be in charge. In doing so you are free from being blamed by your husband for his failure to listen to God, and you cannot be used by the enemy to lead him astray. In addition wives please pray without ceasing for your husband’s relationship with God, for his decision making, for health and safety at work, pray against temptation, and for open and honest communication with you.

Mia’s Testimony

MIA’S STORY

My name is now “Puella Mia” which means “My Girl” in a language called Latin. My name used to be “Muchacha Grande”. I am an ex-race horse who, despite great bloodlines, did not like to race. You may have heard of some of my relatives, “Native Dancer“, “Bold Ruler“…

I was involved in a pretty bad horse trailer accident a few days before I was sold for slaughter. I was in the meat pen and really did not care if I lived another day or died.

I was very thin and had many wounds and abrasions all over my body. A woman named “Kelly” bought me from the kill broker and took me to her place called a “rescue”. After a few short weeks, I felt completely different! Kelly kept me for about a year and had the vet treat my wounds. Then just recently, on August 9th 2012, a very nice family came to take me to their barn and make me a part of their family!

I just love getting attention, treats and to be groomed. I am very thankful for my second chance at life, and now I am blessed to be able to help children overcome their own wounds inside and out!

Would you please help us continue this work with the kids? I really love this new life and want to keep helping kids and their families! Any amount is a true blessing! All donations go directly towards my care and feeding. Thank you and God bless!

XOXO

Love, Puella Mia A.K.A. “Mia”

Pogo’s Testimony

POGO’S STORY

My name is Pogo. I was sent to the kill pen bound for slaughter in February 2007. I was labeled as an “Outlaw Horse” which, in the horse world means, that people thought that I was dangerous and not trainable.

They gave up on me. What they didn’t realize was that I was horribly abused and fearful of people and what they might do to me next.

My actions were because I was afraid and just protecting myself. I never meant to hurt anyone.

Some nice people came to see me two days before I was scheduled to be shipped to slaughter. I liked them right away and followed them willingly onto a nice two-horse trailer. I knew then that my life was saved. The kill broker was not very happy that I loaded so easily for these nice people, but gave him and his brother-in-law three hours of hard work getting me on to their trailer.

It wasn’t easy adjusting to my new life and trusting these new people but, as you can tell we made it. I am very thankful for my second chance at life, and now I am blessed to be able to help children who are abused, at-risk and mislabeled!

Would you please help us continue this work with the kids? I really love this new life and want to keep helping kids and their families! Any amount is a true blessing! All donations go directly towards my care and feeding. Thank you and God bless!

Lady’s Testimony

LADY’S STORY

My name is Lady. I was rescued at the age of three along with my son, a three month old colt. We were purchased from the New Holland Livestock Auction on September 6th 2003. My son and I were brought to a stable in the city.

I was scared and shy and blind in one eye. I was meant to be a little girl’s pony but, was very green which means, I did not know very much about carrying a human on my back.

Several months went by and I remained scared and shy. I did not want many people near me or my baby. On July 4th 2004 a nice family stopped by to say hello to some old friends.

Their eleven year old daughter just came up to my stall and I liked her right away. She and her family took care of me from then on. They taught me how to accept a rider and all the other things a brave pony should know. I was not so afraid any longer.

I am very thankful for my second chance at life, and now I am blessed to be able to help children overcome their own fears! I just LOVE when people, especially children, show me love and attention!

Look out! I may frisk your pockets *smile*

Would you please help us continue this work with the kids? I really love this new life and want to keep helping kids and their families! Any amount is a true blessing! All donations go directly towards my care and feeding. Thank you and God bless!
